It has been quite a while since I have had apple. After making these apple cinnamon protein donuts, I am wondering why I don’t use apple more often.
These donuts were moist and fluffy. I think if I had the choice, I would choose a baked donut over a fried donut. There is just something about that cake like consistency that I love in a donut.
One of my favorite parts about them was having the big moist chunks of apple inside the donut to bite in to. They really made the donuts burst with apple flavor.
To add a litte something else to them, I drizzled them with some cinnamon roll coconut butter from Sweetspreads.
My dad thought these were the best donuts I have made. I can’t say that I disagree with him. They were the perfect fall donut.

Description
Moist apple cinnamon protein cake donuts filled with moist chunks of apple. Topped with cinnamon roll coconut butter drizzle.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp. (78g) whole wheat flour
- 1 scoop (34g) Musclepharm cinnamon bun combat protein powder
- 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. granulated stevia in the raw
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsweetened, natural applesauce
- 1/4 cup (56g) plain nonfat greek yogurt
- 1 whole egg
- 2 tbsp. unsweetened almond milk
- 1 tbsp. (21g) honey
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 small apple
- 2 tbsp. (32g) Sweet Spreads cinnamon roll coconut butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F. Mix whole wheat flour, protein powder, stevia, cinnamon, baking powder, and baking soda in a medium bowl. In a larger bowl, mix applesauce, greek yogurt, egg, almond milk, honey, and vanilla extract.
- Add dry ingredients to wet. Mix slowly until well combined. Be careful not to over mix.
- Peel apple and slice into fourths. The slice each of the fourths into small cubes. Fold apple in to batter.
- Spray donut pan with cooking spray. I only have a 6 spot donut pan, so I cooked 6 then another 2 more separately with the left over batter. Bake for 10 minutes or until a knife comes out clean.
- Let donuts completely cool. Add cinnamon coconut butter to a small plastic sandwich bag. Cut small portion of the tip and pipe the coconut butter evenly on to the donuts.
Notes
* Can sub greek yogurt for canned pumpkin, mashed banana, or more applesauce.
