After a good ride this morning, I really wanted to make a delicious dessert this afternoon. I haven’t made cupcakes in a little while so I figured it was time to make some again. I went with chocolate chip protein cupcakes topped with a creamy chocolate protein icing.
The cupcakes are moist and fluffy just as a good cupcake should be. It can be hard to keep protein baked goods moist because of the protein powder. I like to use things such as Greek yogurt, pumpkin, applesauce, or mashed banana to help keep it from drying out. I also added some coconut oil in these which helped keep them moist.
The best part about these cupcakes, in my opinion, has got to be the frosting. It is definitely one of the better frostings that I have made. It is so creamy and chocolatey. The best part is that there is no sugar in it at all. It is vanilla Greek yogurt, chocolate combat protein powder, reduced fat cream cheese, cocoa powder, and chocolate pudding mix.
The combo of chocolate chip cupcakes topped with the creamy chocolate protein frosting was one of my favorite cupcakes I have ever made!

Ingredients
Chocolate Chip Cupcakes
- 1 cup (120g) whole wheat flour
- 1 scoop (33g) MusclePharm vanilla combat protein powder
- 1/4 cup granulated stevia or erythritol
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 2/3 cup (150g) vanilla Greek yogurt
- 1 whole egg
- 3 tbsp. (36g) truvia brown sugar blend*
- 3 tbsp. milk (any milk is fine)
- 2 tbsp. (28g) coconut oil, melted
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp. (30g) dark chocolate chips
Chocolate Frosting
- 1/2 cup (113g) vanilla Greek yogurt
- 6 tbsp. (85g) reduced fat cream cheese
- 1 scoop (35g) MusclePharm chocolate milk combat protein powder
- 2 tbsp. (11g) sugar free chocolate pudding mix**
- 1 tbsp. (5g) unsweetened cocoa powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F. Add flour, protein powder, stevia and baking powder to a large bowl. Mix. In a separate bowl whisk together Greek yogurt, egg, brown sugar blend, milk, melted coconut oil and vanilla extract.
- Mix wet and dry ingredients and gently fold together until combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Line a muffin tin with 12 cupcake liners. Spoon batter evenly into each.
- Bake for about 11 minutes or until a knife comes out clean. Do not over bake or the cupcakes will dry out quickly. Let cupcakes completely cool.
- While cupcakes are cooling, make frosting. Add Greek yogurt, cream cheese, and protein powder to a bowl. Whisk together until there are no chunks of cream cheese and it is a smooth mixture. Add pudding mix and cocoa powder. Mix again until incorporated. It should start to form a thick frosting.
- Pipe frosting onto cooled cupcakes and enjoy!
Notes
* If you don’t have the truvia brown sugar blend, you can use 1/3 cup of brown sugar instead.
** Do not omit the chocolate pudding mix. You can use another flavor pudding mix if you would like. It needs it to thicken the frosting otherwise it will be runny.
